About Pip Value Calculation
Pip value calculations are used across many financial markets, such as FX (foreign exchange), metals (gold, etc.), energy (oil and natural gas), stocks, indices, and cryptocurrencies. We use "pips" or similar units to measure price movements. Depending on the product you are trading, the definition of a "pip" and the value of a pip can vary.
Currency Pair: EUR/USD
Price: $1.1000 → $1.1001 (1 pip change, 1 pip = $0.0001)
Trading Volume: 1 lot (100,000 units of currency)
Exchange Rate: 1.03255 (EUR/USD)
Pip Value (USD): $0.0001 × 100,000 = $10
Pip Value (EUR): $0.0001 × 100,000 ÷ 1.03255 = €9.68
When trading 1 lot (100,000 units), a 1 pip price movement results in a profit or loss of $10 (or €9.68).
Note: For Japanese Yen pairs, 1 pip is the second decimal place (e.g., 1 USD = 110.00 JPY → 110.01 JPY).
Currency Pair: USD/JPY
Price: 110.00 JPY → 110.01 JPY (1 pip change, 1 pip = ¥0.01)
Trading Volume: 1 lot (100,000 units of currency)
Exchange Rate: 158.23439 (USD/JPY)
Pip Value (JPY): ¥0.01 × 100,000 = ¥1,000
Pip Value (USD): ¥0.01 × 100,000 ÷ 158.23439 = $6.32
When trading 1 lot (100,000 units), a 1 pip price movement results in a profit or loss of ¥1,000 (or $6.32).
Commodity: Gold (XAU/USD)
Price: $1900.0 → $1900.1 (1 pip change, 1 pip = $0.1)
Trading Volume: 1 lot (100 troy ounces)
Pip Value: 100 × $0.1 = $10
When trading 1 lot (100 troy ounces), a 1 pip price movement results in a profit or loss of $10.
